Retractable Screen Maintenance and Care Guide
How to clean, maintain, and protect your retractable screens through every season in Northern Nevada and Lake Tahoe — so they operate smoothly for years.
Why Regular Maintenance Matters
Retractable screens are precision-engineered systems with moving parts — tracks, rollers, springs, and mesh fabric that all work together to deliver smooth, reliable operation. Like any mechanical system in your home, they benefit from regular care. A few minutes of maintenance each season prevents the buildup of dust, pollen, and debris that can cause sticking, grinding, or premature wear — especially in Northern Nevada's high-desert environment where fine dust and seasonal pollen are a constant presence.
Well-maintained retractable screens last significantly longer and operate more smoothly than neglected ones. The good news is that Genius retractable screens are designed for low maintenance — there are no lubrication points, no complex adjustments, and no specialized tools required. Basic cleaning and a few simple seasonal habits are all it takes to keep your screens working like new for years.
How to Clean Your Retractable Screens
Cleaning your retractable screens is straightforward and requires only basic household supplies. Start by fully deploying the screen so the entire mesh surface is accessible. Use a soft-bristled brush — a clean paintbrush works well — to gently remove loose dust and pollen from both sides of the mesh. Work from top to bottom, brushing in a downward motion to avoid dislodging the screen from its track.
For more thorough cleaning, use a damp microfiber cloth with mild soap and warm water. Avoid harsh chemicals, solvents, abrasive cleaners, or pressure washers, as these can degrade the mesh fabric and damage the housing finish. Gently wipe the mesh and the aluminum housing, then dry with a clean cloth. Never retract a wet screen — allow it to dry fully before rolling it back into the housing to prevent mold and mildew.
The track that guides the screen should also be kept clean. Use a vacuum with a soft brush attachment or a dry cloth to remove dust and debris from the track channel. A clean track ensures smooth gliding and prevents the screen from catching or jumping. For motorized screens, wipe the remote and any wall switches with a dry cloth to keep contacts clean.
Seasonal Care for Northern Nevada
Northern Nevada's climate creates specific maintenance considerations throughout the year. Spring brings heavy pollen and insect activity — this is the time to clean your screens thoroughly and check that mesh and tracks are free of debris. Summer's intense UV and heat can stress mesh fabric, so keep screens retracted when not in use to extend their lifespan. The Washoe Zephyr — the strong afternoon wind that sweeps down the Sierra Nevada — can carry dust and debris into tracks, making regular track cleaning especially important for homes in the Carson Valley, Reno, and Minden.
Fall is an ideal time for a full inspection before winter. Check that all hardware is secure, tracks are clean, and the screen retracts and deploys smoothly. For Lake Tahoe properties at elevation, winter means retracting screens during heavy snow and ice events to protect the mesh and housing from damage. Motorized screens with wind sensors should be tested before storm season to ensure auto-retraction works properly.
If you notice any issues — sticking, grinding, loose hardware, or mesh damage — contact us promptly. Attempting to force a sticking screen or disassembling the housing can cause damage that voids your warranty.
